How Blue Light can Affect Your Child’s Health

Blue light is one of the most commonly seen types of wavelengths from the sun. However, it is not only the sun that emits blue light, as it is scientifically proven that phone screens, tablets, laptops emit blue light.

Exposure to blue light can be dangerous to one’s health, especially their eyes. This means that children who suffer from cell phone addiction stand a high risk of developing eye problems, the most popular being short eye-sightedness.

How to handle your child’s cell phone addiction

Once you see signs of your child being addicted to their cell phones, you need to act fast. The first thing to do is to get anti-blue light and UV rays glasses lens. This could be obtained either with prescribed glasses or  not. The idea is to protect their eyes from blue light to prevent short eye-sightedness or a case of lazy eye.

Another important thing is to make frequent visits to the ophthalmologist to ensure that no damage has been done to the eyes already. In the case where damage has been done, proper recommendations will be given as to fixing or managing the damage.

Prevention is better than cure. Hence, we must establish that it is important to create ways to prevent your child from developing an addiction to their cellphones. To do so, focus must be on how to raise your child properly. Here are a few things you can do: 

How to prevent your child from having a cell phone addiction

1. Set a clear time for using mobile phones

It is almost impossible for a child to go without using technology or gadgets in modern times. However, it is your responsibility as a parent to create limits on how long they should be exposed to these gadgets. Hence,you should set a clear time frame for use of these gadgets on a daily basis. Also ensure that they are wearing the anti-blue light glasses when using their phones.

2. Find other activities for your child to do

A great way to prevent cell phone addiction is to create other fun activities for your child. You can engage them in board games, sports , trips, cooking, gardening, etc. The goal is to create fun alternatives and prevent them from sitting in front of a screen all day. Other things you could engage them in are: Volunteer activities, reading books, learning to play an instrument, etc.

3. Reduce your dependence on mobile technology

While we cannot deny the importance of mobile phones and how they have made everything relatively easy for us, we must not get carried away.  A great way to prevent cell phone addiction is to reduce our dependence on cell phones. Substitute your phone alarm for a real alarm clock, wear a wristwatch, read a paper book, visit friends and family in person, etc. These are good ways to reduce your mobile phone usage.

It is common knowledge that blue light is dangerous to the eyes. Hence, parents must pay attention to their child’s level of exposure to this blue light from phone screens and laptops.
