It is no news that many aggressive and ill-mannered children are often victims of a troubled home. It could be due to physical violence in their family, constant fighting, and use of swear words, or divorced parents.

It could also be a case of pure neglect on the parents’ part.

Whatever the reason, we can all agree that a troubled home has adverse effects on a child’s well-being. It could leave trauma that they have to deal with as adults.

The effects of a troubled home on children

The First Line of thought for a child with a troubled or toxic home is to seek refuge in something or someone else. They find themself constantly searching for happiness. Eventually, they find it either in hanging out with friends or dealing with substances such as alcohol and drugs.

Substance use eventually leads to children engaging in social perils such as robbery, physical violence, or hijacking.

While some become a burden to society, others are caught and sent to jail.

Things to do to maintain a healthy relationship with your child

1. Make time for your children regularly

As a parent, your child must be your utmost priority. You need to make sure that your children continually feel loved.

Even when there are separated parents, the child still needs to feel loved by both parents.

Do not deal with your separation by throwing your child into the hands of a relative or leaving them with one parent alone while the other makes no effort to visit.

Make out time to have regular visits and hangouts as one happy family. Develop the culture of healthy co-parenting and ensure you attend to your child’s needs.

In today’s age, it is easier to communicate. Make sure to maintain constant communication with your child.

2. Engage in activities together to build a relationship

As said earlier, you need to engage in activities with your children. Those activities help create family bonding time.

It could involve you engaging in activities that excite your child or trying out a new hobby together. You could go to the movies, take a family vacation, try a new restaurant, etc.

The goal is to not make your child feel lonely and distant.

3. Be a friend to your child

Being a parent is not simply about providing for your child. Proper parenting involves you taking the extra step to be your child’s friend.

Learn to discuss with them where you judge them less and listen more. It helps to keep an open-minded when dealing with your child.

Ensure that you proffer helpful solutions when asked.

You must have proper conversations with them both as an adult and as a friend.

Emphasize that you understand their feelings and guide them in making the right decisions.

A lot of times, parents are to blame for the way their children turn out. This is especially true in the case of a child who had a traumatic childhood.

It is important to recognize the signs of your child distancing themself from the family. In turn, you should make a conscious effort to connect with them.
